Jamie was looking for a way to help reduce the amount of time it took to complete and review safety checks for all the rides at Legoland. She found Jolt and started a pilot. Jamie told us that after getting starting on Jolt, she “had immediate success.” Here's how her team has improved since using Jolt:

“What would you pay to have your best person in every single one of your locations all the time?”

Sean was tired of spending hours each day fumbling through paper to make sure his employees were doing the tasks they were assigned to. After many failed attempts to adopt other task management tools, Sean's employees always reverted back to the “old school” paper and pen approach.

“Nothing was really getting done, many times employees would forget to finish their tasks, this wasted a lot of time out of our day and our results were not measurable.”

Paper inefficiencies were experienced both at the restaurants and above store at the central office.

Dustin originally used paper checklists and a program called QRSoft in order to manage his operations.

“I didn't know what was happening in my locations when I wasn't there. QSR soft is not real-time. It was all printing out forms. If your boss comes in, he'd look at it, if not, you'd throw it away at the end of the day. You're being reactive not proactive. You don't want to always be putting out fires, but preventing fires from happening.”

As a restaurant owner, Dustin is constantly bombarded with new companies offering him solutions to his problems. Before trying Jolt, he wasn't very confident that it was going to be any different.

“Is this program going to increase or help my business? Is this going to improve my service and sales? Is it going to be worth it? Is this enough of a change from what we're doing to give us the boost we need?”

The first thing Dustin noticed was how easy it was to get started with Jolt, and how easy it was for his employees to use it.

“Operationally, Jolt is pretty straightforward. I have folks that are really good with technology, and people that are bad at technology. Both are very capable of using the system...and we're always going to have both types of people.”

Dustin decided to test Jolt against his biggest challenge: meal times. Dustin wanted to see if Jolt could help him prepare his employees for lunch and dinner rushes. He also set up alerts to know whether or not each location is prepared so he can call in and fix problems if needed.

“A lot of the lists I've set up are checklists going into a peak or lunch rush. I'll get that alert before it gets busy, before it's too late to say “Hey, did you check this?” or “Why didn't you check this thing which could have been a major barrier to our service before a busy time of day?” I like the ability to know someone didn't do something so we can avoid major problems for our service for the busiest time of day.”

Dustin figured out that, without traveling to each location, he can rely on Jolt's reporting and alerts to know if they're properly prepared for high-traffic periods. He quickly overcame his skepticism.

“I like the program. I'm a fan of the program. I mean, What would you pay to have your best person in every single one of your locations all the time? Jolt is a system that is designed for being in multiple places at one time, in the sense that you have immediate follow-up capability. Jolt gives me the ability, in real-time, to review all locations, whether I'm in one of them, or not any of them--and to be proactive. The options are almost limitless in what you can do.”

“It's as close to a proactive system that you will run a business the way top leadership would want it run. There is, unfortunately, what we all think is happening all-day long every day, and then what is actually happening all-day every day. This is closest system that would be like having the owner, or top leadership, constantly in the restaurant or in the business, all the time.”

Dustin has shared his experience with other businesses, both inside and outside of McDonald's.

“There's an application for Jolt in any type of restaurant--whether it's casual dine or quick service. Almost anyone that's franchisable, this program could work for them. Any type of franchise system is going to run into the same types of problems I do.”

As a supervisor over multiple stores, Nicole had trouble making sure Travel Paths were completed at each restaurant and that they were completed correctly.

“Travel Paths were slipping by before Jolt. If they were doing them, Supervisors didn’t know if they were actually hitting all the correct points...When we visit the restaurant and notice trash on the lot, we would question that the tasks were done.”

This was having a negative impact on restaurant cleanliness and customer service and satisfaction.

“If Travel Paths and cleaning lists aren’t done, customers come to a dirty lot or see dirty tables in the lobby. This impacts the customers and their reviews. If the lobby and lot are dirty, customer’s will start to question what the kitchen looks like as well.”

Setting up travel paths in Jolt allowed Nicole to receive notifications and know when things were done or not. Also the QR codes provided an extra layer of accountability.

“Now we know if they are doing or not doing their travel path...Having them do the extra step to scan the QR code, we know they are checking all those areas in the restaurant.”

Jolt has provided reporting and top of mind awareness that helps Nicole manage food safety and temperature checks at their locations as well.

“Every month we would have monthly performance reviews and have discussions at that time...There was no reporting to actually prove if something was done or not done. There was a lot of paperwork for food safety and having to dig into a book. With Jolt we now have alerts so as a supervisor, I can be alerted during the day on critical food safety lists. I know what is happening in the store each day. We have always had good procedures and systems in place but with Jolt this helps us to ensure and KNOW without a doubt if things are in range or not.”

Nicole's restaurants take food safety to the next level with Jolt's Temperature Probes.

“With the bluetooth temperature probes there is no pencil whipping. We don't have to worry about temperatures because we know what we are getting is accurate. If they are out of range we know immediately and can take action to make sure our food is safe.”

Jolt has become an integral part of their daily operations and the positive effect is felt at every level of the business.

“I interact with Jolt on a day to day basis due to the alerts. When I am in the restaurant I can use the iPad to quickly review checklists. For my regular team members, they now have a better understanding of their standards and can take pride in their job, knowing that they work for a company that cares about cleanliness and that their food is safe.”

“Jolt smooths out wrinkles I didn’t know were there”

Before discovering Jolt, Justin tried several different task management options, including Google Forms, Wunderlist, iAuditor, Asana, and Digital Red Book, but each one had serious gaps in functionality. Using Jolt quickly demonstrated that it was “feature-rich and very customizable in a way that makes sense.”

“When I talk to others about Jolt, I just tell them to check it out because it will revolutionize the way they do task management.”

Justin found that Jolt made the lives of his employees easier by allowing them to only see and worry about their own tasks and by centralizing their priorities and information. The new options for task types, including pictures, QR code scans, and temperature measurements, as well as the ability to control repetition sets, due dates, and due times, enabled him to rethink how he managed his store. He says that Jolt “smooths out wrinkles I didn’t know were there.”

After looking at so many different demos, Justin finally found a product that was ”intuitive in how it was built.” He “felt like it was built by someone with actual QSR experience.”--and he was right. He says that Jolt understands the current challenges of restaurateurs, and that the company “takes feedback seriously and genuinely listens to their customers.” Along with that, he says Jolt’s “customer service has been on point and responsive, and I have never questioned their technical expertise.”

Ryan's team instantly saw training benefits from Jolt. Since training materials can be directly attached to individual task items, he put the FC lists on Jolt and attached specific materials from eTRAIN for each task. He also has lists for the kitchen, leadership procedures (opening/closing, InFORM, EOM, etc.), and ordering (truck, produce, change, etc.). Ryan points out that Jolt “doesn't replace training or eTRAIN but is a great addition to enforce those learnings.”

“Having the specific [eTRAIN] pages linked on each checklist item helps team members do it the Chick-fil-A way versus the ‘tribal knowledge’ way.”

Ryan is also using the Jolt Information Library to make key information (e.g., emergency and repair contacts, team member phone numbers, the policy handbook, and the How Do I Code Guide) conveniently available to every employee.

“I wouldn't be suggesting to my fellow Operators to invest in something I didn't feel was of great value to the restaurant... I feel like I've just begun to realize the power of this tool.”

Lastly, Ryan is benefiting from a big boost in accountability. The system automatically records which employees complete which tasks, so he knows who his most productive employees are and who to talk to if something didn’t actually get completed. On top of that, unique task types like pictures or QR code scans and notifications for overdue items assure him that tasks are done correctly and on time.

Corey came to Jolt looking for a way to implement systems for all of their processes. Laminated checklists lacked accountability and were unengaging, failing to meet his needs. Jolt’s smart checklists added the extra accountability and engagement he was looking for.

“Our Taste of Food scores went from 72% to 84% the first month we had Jolt”

Corey found the accountability offered by Jolt to be extremely helpful. Before Jolt, he worried about whether tasks were getting done when he wasn’t in the store; now he can use the web portal to see the progress of the team, including who completed which tasks at what times and pictures of key items. The reminders and due times help staff to properly manage their time in order to finish everything every day, and employees are actually actively engaged with the iPad and app.

To improve consistency in customer experience, Corey uses the secondary real-time training feature available with the smart checklists. He attaches training reference materials directly to individual tasks so employees can easily review the proper way to complete tasks without having to ask managers or waste time going to the back office.

After using Jolt for the last year, Sam’s stores are now more efficient and productive. He is “easily paying for the investment through cost savings. Using a conservative estimate,” he said, “Even if you figure at my average wage of $12.50/hour that I save 2 hours of time each day, that would be significant savings, and well worth the monthly investment.” He estimates that he is saving at least $25/day (~$650/month), justifying the $99.99 monthly subscription.

“It just simplifies everything for everybody”

In the fast paced and ever changing restaurant environment, Garrett had frustrations keeping up with all the changes in their operations.

“We were always having to reprint things and laminate like crazy just because policies or operations changed like the opening duties, closing duties, the way servers did closeouts... it was a lot of extra time and it was really hard to make sure that both locations had the correct operations and were on the same page, so it was very challenging for us to do that before we had Jolt.”

This created headaches and inefficiencies leading to the need to redo work.

“A lot of times people would go around and have to redo work, or show someone how to do something right because the paper lists weren't updated.”

When Garrett saw Jolt lists he was able to visualize the potential impact it could have on his business.

“I just knew the possibility was there and the future was bright if we were able to go to something where all our line checks could be done on an iPad and moving everything to digital to see timestamps of when things were done.

It would benefit us all if we were able to get an eye in the sky of what was really going on at the store level, because to go back and flip through papers and papers and papers, and I would never even know times stamps of when things were done. I think that was kinda a no brainer for us to switch to it.”

Jolt lists gave Garrett the flexibility to manage and update all of his checklists digitally.

“I love the ability that the store levels have a way to create custom lists, I can’t tell you how much documentation, if you even saw how many checklists and how many things we create, but it’s amazing. I love the ability to customize lists per location.”

He reports that Jolt has made it 10x easier to manage his checklists and hold employees accountable to the standard of excellence that he expects for his locations, as well as complying with corporate standards for QSCs and EcoSure Audits. Garrett's Gilbert store received a 100% score on a corporate EcoSure audit. Speaking of Jolt's role in helping meet the standards, Garrett said:

“It makes it easier by far, especially when there are changes...It makes it 10 times easier, but at the same time it’s also ownership, pride of ownership that drives me to want to create a better standard than the norm. If the tools are there, which they are with Jolt, and it is easy to manage and update, then yeah, the program makes it a lot, absolutely easier to hit those higher scores.”

Not only did Jolt lists accomplish what Garrett was looking for, he found Jolt was able to help in many other aspects of their operations as well.

“You really opened our eyes to a whole bunch of other stuff. We only knew the norm before we were introduced to Jolt Labeling. That was all we knew. Previously we were using Day Dots. In one month we were at about 15,000 labels. If you do the math of what they cost, that’s a big saver right there.”

Garrett saves approximately $141.75 a month just on the price of labels by switching from Day Dots to Jolt. On top of that, Garrett saves time by eliminating employees filling out labels by hand while streamlining food safety as well.

“Everyone loves Jolt labeling: our kitchen, our management team, and all our team members. We don’t have as many sharpies back there and pens filling out date code stickers which is fantastic. And what about all the people putting wrong dates on, or not knowing what stickers to use and putting wrong labels on? It makes it easier now when they just press the button and they know the shelf life is on there already.”

They've also improved food safety and streamlined temperature checks with Jolt's Temperature Probes at their Casa Grande location.

“The time that it takes to temp something, go and write it down, come back, temp something again, go and write it down and come back – I think that was huge. I would say that they are able to shave, maybe 10 minutes every shift which obviously adds up over the course of a week, and we do our line checks twice a day, sometimes three. If we are shaving 10 minutes each time we are doing a line check by using the digital platform I think it benefits me in the long run.

My managers love it for the accuracy. It helps because they can’t fudge numbers when they use the temperature probes which is great. They like the ease of it, just being able to go around and temp something, press the button, and it goes to the next item. They do like that alot.”

Garrett summarizes Jolt's overall impact on his operations:

“Jolt makes the day to day operations easier for your managers and your team members for sure. It just simplifies everything for everybody. With us changing managers, a revolving door with team members and everything – our goal is to make this as dummy proof as possible so that anyone can step into the shoes of any position and be able to accomplish that position. I think that Jolt helps with that. It helps team members speed up, it helps managers get caught up faster knowing what to do. I definitely think it improves turnaround time to get them ready to be on their own and to manage and to run the floor.”

Chad was looking for a way to reduce the high cost of training new employees. They were “not able to get trainings done per site,” and it was “hard to keep the trainings all together.” He also saw that many of his employees were relying too much on their managers. After using Jolt, Chad reports that the need to train new people had gone down. Jolt takes care of it for him.

“Jolt is helping us to get everybody on the same page and get them to do what we need them to do. We don't need a higher end manager at each place anymore. This almost takes over that position. That's changing a lot of things for us.”

Chad really appreciates how Jolt can automate your store operations. His employees always know the "what", "when", and "how" for every moment. And Chad now has a record of who did what and when. Jolt is always a part of his improvement plans. He ”now sit[s] down with managers and review[s] things on Jolt.“

Several months after Chad started with Jolt, we released our Date Code Labeling system. That has resulted in major cost savings for Chad, both in materials and labor

“One thing that's really nice is to be able to do the times. To have that print out the time that everything is going to be expired is really cool. We can do build-tos, at the Subway and Arby's. They'll build so many cambros of tomatoes, and they don't need a manager to tell them. When the health inspector came in and saw those, he was really impressed. Our Arby's inspector was impressed as well.”

Impressed with how Jolt has helped him in his operations, Chad has gone on to share Jolt with several of his vendors and operators in other brands.

Dan was having difficulty holding people accountable for tasks, and as a result, tasks had to be redone creating frustration and inefficiency.

“We had no way to hold people accountable...things weren’t getting consistently done because there was no system of checks and balances. They weren’t doing the stocking, so prep wasn’t getting done effectively, and it wasn’t the same thing every day like it should be. They would be like, 'Oh, yeah. I told Joe to do it, but Joe never ended up doing it' and they would just push blame on other people...This created extra steps that we had to take to make sure the job was done right.”

A push for consistency across the business drove them to consider a program like Jolt

“The owners started wanting things to be similar throughout our company. We wanted the same paperwork, we wanted the same lists, we wanted the same stocking, same everything. We wanted something that we didn’t have to take the time to create, something that had the ability to evolve and constantly change with the ever growing market.”

They considered Jolt as it looked promising to be the solution they were looking for.

“At that point we had already done the homework on it...We were looking for a program that had it all with a little extra. Extra being the scheduling app, the mobile compatibility, the fact that you can use the Jolt app from your phone and do the stock list. Just the sheer flexibility of the program.”

After implementing Jolt, Dan quickly found things falling into place. Jolt was becoming the ideal digital assistant manager.

“I would just say that it has been the light at the end of the tunnel that everyone has always wanted, because consistency has been a pretty large problem. It gives us ease of mind basically. It allows us the comfort of knowing that stuff is still getting done even if we are not there, by using the notification system when something is not complete. It’s got multiple checks and balances, it holds people accountable, and it inspires people to take pride that they are actually physically accomplishing something everyday that they work.”

Even the crew members became excited.

“I just started putting the labels into one of our other stores yesterday and training their crew, and they are just like, 'This is amazing! No more thinking required, I can just come over here and press a button and it’s easy.' So they are excited, it has helped increase team moral as well.”

Dan had the following to say about Jolt's impact on their business:

“Jolt has helped us with not wasting as much product because it is not getting over prepped. People are controlled on how much they have to prepare vs. doing just whatever they feel is the right amount. So we save money in regards to waste.

The scheduling app has saved me countless times where we would have to search around for a little piece of paper that says so and so can’t work. Now we have it where it’s on the phone and it's on the physical schedule. There is no gray area.

From an employee labor standpoint, people are way more productive. Generally I would say Jolt has saved us a lot of money along those lines. They come in, they get it done, and it’s consistent.

We also have noticed higher customer satisfaction due to the fact that the quality of food that is being produced is better, because we have the ability to dictate the levels and controls on a day to day’s fresher and it’s just a better quality product.”

But Dan's favorite aspect of Jolt is just how flexible it is.

Jen was tired of the lack of organization and the mess created from trying to manage things on paper.

“When I wanted to leave a message for the crew, there was paper all over the store, the day dots were making a mess, the training materials were in a separate place. My staff needed to know 10 different places to find the information they needed.

Frustrated by the inaccuracies of handwritten labels and checklists. Nicole decided it was time to find a system that would improve accuracy and accountability for both her and her managers.

Rene came to use Jolt because he was particularly frustrated with the standard of training in the food service industry.

“A lot of franchises provide you with videos and content that's designed to be used on a PC or a DVD player. It's far away from where you're doing the task itself. If you're watching a movie on how to make a smoothie you're not able to try it out immediately. You're going to lose the effectiveness of the training. ”

“There's also a lot of complicated tasks in a restaurant that there just isn't any training for. You write these long lists of how to clean something or do something. Regardless of how smart the employee is, you run into problems like 'Hey, I don't know what you meant by that' or 'I don't know what that tools is called or what that looks like.'”

Rene decided to try Jolt becaused it was designed specifically for on-the-job training. Jolt allows employees to view their task lists and training in one simple interface, right behind the counter. He immediately felt the value of Jolt.

Rene also loved the increased visibility which can then lead to quick improvement. He mentioned how important it is to get quick feedback.

“I can take immediate actions instead of two weeks later. Jolt gives you an instant ability to see how are your stores performing, and which stores need help. You don't have to wait 30 days for a P&L to come out. You don't have to do any kind of analyzing to see their turnover is really high. You don't need to wait for any of that stuff, you get that feedback every single day. If you get ten emails [from Jolt] from every single day notifying you that things are not getting done in one location and you have another location you get none from, you know What is going on in your organization--even without going [into Jolt] to see what is being missed.”

Several months after Rene started using Jolt, we released our labeling system. This also proved to save Rene a lot of time and frustration.

“ It takes time to fill out a date label [by hand]. There is also frustration with people not figuring out how to fill out a label. Every time you get a health inspector, there's always going to be at least one label where someone made that mistake. Now there is no room for error. There is no way of extending the hold time or manipulating the time it was printed. Now there is a way of seeing who did it if you noticed that it wasn't prepped or done to your standards. That is a bigger win over the fact that it has reduced the time that it takes to actually do it--cause it's instant. ”

Vaughn was printing checklists every week and had frustrations with accountability and visibility.

The team at Jolt were very helpful in getting us setup, and provided us all the initial training and support in getting the best of the Jolt system and customizing the templates to suit our needs. Marc realized that scaling his brand beyond a single location would create additional challenges. In his own words:

Gavin was frustrated with trying to manually audit and monitor dental assistant's task completion outside of surgery. There were health and safety concerns in terms of sterilization and infection control.

“The only way we would know if things were not done is when something fell apart or broke, or someone got injured, or the next day things weren’t ready.”

They really wanted a system that could do a lot more.

“In terms of policing it, we would only do it about once a week because it was such a process of going around and physically checking stock labels and going to check the hygiene stand for sterilization and standards... we didn’t really have an adequate real time way of monitoring it.”

Other solutions simply do not provide the flexibility or the employee-based incentives Jolt does. In addition, Jolt has become our one stop solution for tracking and training of employees. We even perform employee performance reviews using an iPad mini with Jolt. This provides as a way to scale our operations without paper.

Anything which can help automate restaurant operations is a great thing. In today's market restaurants need every advantage to make them competitive. Customers want their food fast, fresh, and at low prices. Not taking advantage of technology like Jolt could put a restaurant at a disadvantage.

Simply put, Jolt reduces the number of hours my employees spend tracking work tasks. That labor savings in aggregate is a significant savings to our bottom line.

This was a common question among employees at The Soda Shop. Because of Jolt's checklists, The Soda Shop has eliminated this question during their daily operations. Jolt has been able to give all employees, including managers, the direction they need to run an efficient business.

The Soda Shop uses Jolt's lists and information to make sure that all their employees know how to do their jobs. The information library enables their employees to access the information needed to complete their job. They attach how-to videos to each of their tasks sheets.
